Remember When: Ode to Daddy
by Karen Dahl
December 1, 1995 (51st birthday)
Who is half responsible
For this life I call my own?
It is my father, Mr. Jim,
If it must be known.
When I was just a little girl
He brought me toys from work
He traveled every day
To the city of New York
I went with him one day
On the train in my blue dress
I tried the newest toys
Coleco was the best
Many nights back then
Daddy came home late
He was working very hard
To keep food on my plate
Then one day he stayed home
And left the house no more
Even when we pushed him
He would not go out the door
It was fun to have a Dad
Who was always there
When I came home from school
I’d sit on his green chair
I sat up really high
And watched him make a doll
A phone, a car, a Batmobile.
And while he worked, I played
With his tools and our cats
I sanded down his table
He didn’t really like that
But he liked my company
And I would help him out
I’d give him new ideas
And sometimes made him shout
It was great to have a Dad
Who was home all the time
He picked me up from school
And didn’t charge a dime
He watched me make new friends
Some girls and lots of boys
They all thought he was awesome
‘Cause he made the coolest toys
Every year I grew up
He grew a little too
The games became less frequent
We had too much much stuff to do
We both had lots of work
And didn’t see each other much
I was always out
So we began to lose touch
We still had some time though
He waited up for me
Whenever I came home
Our words were short and sweet
About the show we saw
The race, the chase, the scene
A run in with the law
The subject didn’t matter
Because we understood
We got along in a way
That others never could
Now I’ve gone away to school
Where everything is scary and new
But I am safe and won’t forget
The things that are inside of me
The part of me that’s you.
